JACO PASTORIUS / WEATHER REPORT Jaco Pastorius, born John Francis Pastorius III (December 1st , 1951 – September 21st , 1987) was a Jazz Bassist and composer, notable for his virtuoso technique and playing style. His big influence on the modern electric bass is widely touted, as he was responsible for the popularization of fretless electric bass. He introduced a textural approach and harmonic sense to bass playing that became the signature "Jaco" sound. His career was cut short due to problems with drugs and depression, but his technique and style have profoundly influenced bassists both in jazz and in other genres. Weather Report was an influential jazz fusion band of the 1970s and 1980s. The band was originally a spin-off from the group of musicians associated with Miles Davis in the late sixties and early seventies. The stable core of the group was the duo of Pianist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, while the other musicians were rotated with almost every album. Initially, the band's music featured extended improvisation, similar to Davis' Bitches Brew -period work, and instrumentation included both a traditional trap set drummer and a second percussionist (first Airto Moreira, later Dom Um Romao).
